About Tanzania

Where is Tanzania located?

Tanzania is located in East Africa, bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east. Its capital city is Dodoma, while Dar es Salaam serves as its largest city and main port.

What is the language spoken in Tanzania?

The official languages of Tanzania are Swahili (Kiswahili) and English. Swahili is widely spoken and serves as the lingua franca, while English is used in business, government, and education. It's helpful to learn a few basic Swahili phrases to enhance your travel experience and communicate with locals.

What is the currency used in Tanzania?

The currency used in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). While US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas and for larger purchases, it's advisable to carry some Tanzanian Shillings for smaller transactions and in more remote areas.

What are some traditional foods and drinks to try in Tanzania?

Tanzania offers a rich culinary heritage influenced by its diverse cultures and geographical regions. Some traditional foods to try include:

Ugali: A staple dish made from maize flour, often served with meat or vegetable stew.

Nyama Choma: Grilled meat, typically goat, beef, or chicken, seasoned with spices and served with side dishes like ugali and salad.

Pilau: Spiced rice cooked with meat or vegetables, flavored with cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and other spices.

Chapati: Thin, unleavened flatbread, usually served with meat, beans, or vegetables.

Mandazi: Sweet, deep-fried doughnuts, often enjoyed as a snack or breakfast item.

Traditional drinks include:

Chai: Sweet, milky tea flavored with spices like ginger, cardamom, and cloves.

Tembo: A local brew made from fermented maize or millet, often consumed during celebrations and social gatherings.

Coconut water: Fresh coconut water, readily available in coastal areas and on Zanzibar Island, is known for its refreshing taste and health benefits.

Best Time To Visit Tanzania

The best time to visit Tanzania largely depends on what you want to experience. The dry season from June to October is considered the best time for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources, and vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot. The wildebeest migration in the Serengeti usually occurs from December to July, offering a spectacular wildlife spectacle.

However, the wet season from November to May brings lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and the opportunity to witness newborn animals. It's essential to consider your priorities and interests when planning your visit.

Cost of Tanzania Safari

The cost of a safari in Tanzania can vary depending on various factors such as the duration of the safari, the level of luxury or accommodation chosen, the number of people in your group, and the activities included. Generally, safaris range from budget-friendly options to luxury experiences, with prices typically covering accommodation, meals, transportation, park fees, and guided activities. It's advisable to research and compare safari packages offered by a tour operator to find one that fits your budget and preferences.

Where to go?

Tanzania offers a diverse range of destinations catering to various interests. Some of the must-visit places include:

Serengeti National Park

Famous for its annual wildebeest migration and abundant wildlife.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Home to the stunning Ngorongoro Crater, a natural wonder and wildlife hotspot

My friend and I had always dreamed of going on an African safari, and booking our 10-day trip with Mond Safaris was the best decision we could have made. Uganda is truly beautiful and incredibly blessed with nature. We were amazed by everything we experienced—from seeing Africa’s Big Five to the unforgettable mountain gorilla trekking. One of the highlights was visiting Murchison Falls, which was simply breathtaking. A big thank you to Joseph and the entire Mond Safaris team for making this journey so seamless and unforgettable. Everything was well organized, and the level of care and attention to detail was exceptional.

Our 7-day safari in Uganda with Mond Safaris was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The highlight of the trip was definitely gorilla trekking—a true once-in-a-lifetime experience that left us speechless. We also visited Kibale National Park, which was amazing, and Lake Mburo National Park, where we enjoyed a walking safari that was both exciting and unforgettable. Every day felt well planned and special. Our guide, Emma, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about wildlife and Uganda, which made the whole experience even better. Joe was also fantastic—very helpful and professional in organizing the entire trip and making sure everything ran smoothly. I highly recommend Mond Safaris to anyone planning to travel to Uganda. You guys are wonderful, and we couldn’t have asked for a better safari experience. — Maureen Nampala USA 🇺🇸

My friend and I booked a holiday trip to Uganda with Mond Safaris, and it was honestly the best trip we’ve ever had! Everything was well planned and went smoothly from start to finish. We got to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park, which was beautiful and full of wildlife. One of the best parts of our trip was the private boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, where we saw so many hippos up close – it was such an amazing experience. Our guide, Emma, was fantastic. He was really professional, friendly, and knew so much about the animals and the area. We also want to thank Joseph, who helped us choose this trip. He was super helpful, and we’re so glad we listened to his advice. We’re really happy we chose to spend our holiday in Uganda. The country is beautiful, the people are welcoming, and Mond Safaris made everything easy and fun. Big thanks to Joseph, Emma, and the whole Mond Safaris team – you did a great job!

Joseph, we are truly grateful to have found you to organise our super short trip to Rwanda and Uganda. We’ve made core memories that will stay with us forever. Thank you so much for suggesting and planning the itinerary to perfection from start to finish. We have enjoyed the company, conversations, phenomenal stories shared by you, Nicholas and Abdul! You guys are an A-team! We would be delighted to recommend your company to plan exceptional trips in East Africa. The knowledge and insight you have is wonderful. We have learnt so much about Uganda through you and witnessed it during our trip. It’s a hidden gem and we now know why it is the Pearl of Africa and we hope to experience more of it in the future with you. Everyone was so warm and welcoming. We are going to miss every little special moments from the trip. From arriving in Kigali to the Gorilla tracking in Biwindi to our time enjoying lunch together at Lake Victoria. It all went so fast and smoothly. All thanks to your exceptional planning! Thank you!!!
