Mond safaris Uganda Travel Advisory: Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting Uganda

Uganda is located in the eastern part of Africa and also known as the "Pearl of Africa," is a breathtaking destination known for its rich wildlife, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultural heritage. Whether you are planning to explore its national parks or go on a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking adventure, proper planning is essential. Here is a comprehensive guide on what you need to know before visiting Uganda, brought to you by Mond Safaris, experts in crafting unforgettable safari experiences.

Uganda Visa Requirements

Most travelers need a visa to enter Uganda. You can apply for an e-visa online via the Uganda e-Visa system (uganda visa link) or obtain one upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport. The most common option is :

A. Ordinary - a single entry tourist visa valid for 3 months. USD 50.

B. East Africa Tourist Visa - which you can use to cross to Kenya and Rwanda. USD 100. (apply for this visa in your arrival country)

C. Multiple Entry Visa - if you plan to be in and out of the country multiple times within 6 to 12 months.

Mond Safaris recommends applying for your visa at least 15 days before your arrival date. It’s also important to confirm visa requirements well in advance and ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Health and Vaccinations

When traveling to Uganda, A Yellow Fever vaccination card is required for all persons travelling to Uganda from the age of 1 year and over, as it's required for entry. You will need to present your yellow card (vaccination certificate) at the airport. If you arrive at Entebbe airport without proof of vaccination, you are likely to get the vaccine and the certificate on-site. However, this can be quite expensive, so it’s best to get vaccinated before leaving your home country.

Additionally, Uganda is in a malaria-prone zone, taking antimalarial medication and using mosquito repellent is essential. Mond Safaris advises all travelers to sleep under mosquito nets, which are provided at all the lodges we work with.

We also recommend that all travelers visiting Uganda or East Africa secure comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies.

Safety and Security in Uganda

Uganda is generally safe for tourists. Most travelers have trouble-free visits, especially in popular tourist areas like Kampala,, Jinja, Entebbe, and the national parks. However, like anywhere in the world, it's always a good idea to take basic safety precautions. Avoid walking alone at night, be cautious when using public transport, and keep your valuables like wallets and phones secure in busy places.

At Mond Safaris, your safety is our top priority. We provide professional guides and drivers to ensure you're always in safe hands. We stay informed on local travel advisories and offer guided tours so you can explore Uganda with confidence and peace of mind.

Best Time to Visit Uganda

Uganda can be visited year-round, but the best time to travel is during the dry seasons, from December to February and June to September. These are ideal months for wildlife safaris, gorilla trekking, and other outdoor activities because the roads are more accessible and animals tend to gather around water sources, making wildlife viewing easier.

The rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) can still offer unique experiences, and you will find fewer tourists. However, Mond Safaris recommends planning your safari during the dry season to get the most out of your adventure.

Currency and Money Matters in Uganda

Uganda’s official currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). While US dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas, it’s important to carry cash in smaller denominations for local transactions. Although credit cards are accepted in major hotels and lodges, cash is often preferred in smaller towns and more remote areas. ATMs are available in cities like Kampala and Entebbe, but if you are venturing into rural areas, we advise carrying some local currency for tipping and small purchases or your needs.

Transportation in Uganda

Most travelers arrive in Uganda through Entebbe International Airport, located near Kampala. Getting around Uganda can be an adventure in itself. Public transportation options like buses and motorcycle taxis (boda-bodas) are available, but they can be unpredictable and sometimes unsafe.

For a hassle-free experience, Mond Safaris offers private, comfortable transportation throughout your trip. We provide well-maintained 4x4 vehicles with experienced drivers, especially for safaris to national parks. If you are short on time, domestic flights are available to popular destinations like Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth National Park and others.

Gorilla Trekking Permits

One of the main reasons tourists visit Uganda is to experience gorilla trekking. Seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is a unique and unforgettable experience. However, gorilla trekking requires a permit, which should be booked in advance. Permits cost around $800 USD per person (as of 2024).

Mond Safaris will handle all the logistics for you, from securing your gorilla trekking permits to organizing your accommodation near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Since only a limited number of permits are issued each day, it’s important to book early.

Language and Culture

Uganda is a multilingual country, but English is the official language and is widely spoken in urban areas, tourist sites, and by safari guides. Luganda is another common language, especially in central Uganda. While most people in the tourism industry speak English, learning a few phrases in the local language is always appreciated by Ugandans.

Electricity and Connectivity

Uganda operates on 240V with British-style three-pin plugs. Power outages are common, especially in rural areas, so it’s wise to carry a portable charger or power bank to keep your devices powered during your travels.

Mond Safaris works with accommodations that offer reliable electricity and amenities like Wi-Fi. While internet access is generally available in hotels and lodges in cities and major tourist destinations, it may be slower or limited in remote areas.
