Uganda Visa Requirements

Most travelers need a visa to enter Uganda. You can apply for an e-visa online via the Uganda e-Visa system (uganda visa link) or obtain one upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport. The most common option is :

A. Ordinary - a single entry tourist visa valid for 3 months. USD 50.

B. East Africa Tourist Visa - which you can use to cross to Kenya and Rwanda. USD 100. (apply for this visa in your arrival country)

C. Multiple Entry Visa - if you plan to be in and out of the country multiple times within 6 to 12 months.

Mond Safaris recommends applying for your visa at least 15 days before your arrival date. It’s also important to confirm visa requirements well in advance and ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Health and Vaccinations

When traveling to Uganda, A Yellow Fever vaccination card is required for all persons travelling to Uganda from the age of 1 year and over, as it's required for entry. You will need to present your yellow card (vaccination certificate) at the airport. If you arrive at Entebbe airport without proof of vaccination, you are likely to get the vaccine and the certificate on-site. However, this can be quite expensive, so it’s best to get vaccinated before leaving your home country.

Additionally, Uganda is in a malaria-prone zone, taking antimalarial medication and using mosquito repellent is essential. Mond Safaris advises all travelers to sleep under mosquito nets, which are provided at all the lodges we work with.

Avoid walking alone at night, be cautious when using public transport, and keep your valuables like wallets and phones secure in busy places.

Best Time to Visit Uganda

Uganda can be visited year-round, but the best time to travel is during the dry seasons, from December to February and June to September. These are ideal months for wildlife safaris, gorilla trekking, and other outdoor activities because the roads are more accessible and animals tend to gather around water sources, making wildlife viewing easier.

The rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) can still offer unique experiences, and you will find fewer tourists. However, Mond Safaris recommends planning your safari during the dry season to get the most out of your adventure.

Currency and Money Matters in Uganda

Uganda’s official currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). While US dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas, it’s important to carry cash in smaller denominations for local transactions. Although credit cards are accepted in major hotels and lodges, cash is often preferred in smaller towns and more remote areas. ATMs are available in cities like Kampala and Entebbe, but if you are venturing into rural areas, we advise carrying some local currency for tipping and small purchases or your needs.

Transportation in Uganda

Most travelers arrive in Uganda through Entebbe International Airport, located near Kampala. Getting around Uganda can be an adventure in itself. Public transportation options like buses and motorcycle taxis (boda-bodas) are available, but they can be unpredictable and sometimes unsafe.

However, gorilla trekking requires a permit, which should be booked in advance. Permits cost around $800 USD per person (as of 2024).
