Walking Safaris in Uganda | best-walking safaris in Africa

Walking Safari- In Uganda, walking safaris have increasingly become integral to any safari people take. Many tourists prefer to combine walking safaris with other activities such as gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, boat cruises, and game drives while in Uganda. If you wish to do some walking while in Uganda, the below should give you an idea, and let us be the ones to take you there.

A Walking Safari is simply walking in a protected area or national park with an escorted game ranger getting closer to the wildlife on foot. While on our gorilla and wildlife safaris we encourage that at least our visitors get the experience of walking in the wild. Walking safaris should not be confused with nature walks. These particular walking safaris are conducted only in two national parks in Uganda and are usually conducted very early in the morning starting about 7:00am and can go on up to 10:00am noon. They can also start from 4:30pm to about 6:00pm.

You can combine your gorilla trekking tour with a walking safari in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Uganda Wildlife Authority operates nature based walking safaris in Bwindi and the most popular ones are located in different trails head of Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija and Nkuringo. These forest walks expose you to the beauty of this forest where you will encounter other primates in this forest such as Black and white Colobus monkeys, un habituated chimps, birds, butterflies and waterfalls. There walking safari options to the community and one popular trail is the Buhoma Village walk that takes you to community farms to observe their agricultural practices, to a herbalist to establish how herbs are processed to cure some diseases, to a local brewing plant and then a visit to the home of the Batwa (pygmies) who used to stay in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park before it was gazzetted as a national Park in early 1990’s.

For the more adventurous and physically fit clients, we recommend the Nkuringo walking safari which starts from either Buhoma in the north or Nkuringo in the south. This walking safari takes you through the forest and lasts 2-3 hours. This trek is good for bird, primate and nature loving clients who prefer to enjoy nature on foot. Please note that its better to start from Nkuringo to Buhoma due to the fact that you will be slopping instead of climbing.

Walking safaris are everywhere in Uganda and if in Kibale National Park, you can try out a forest walk in the park for birding and primate identification or join Bigodi wetland walk which was designed to support the local communities around Kibale National Park. No matter where you will be visiting, we can advise where to do your walking Safari. Common residents are the zebra herds, Impala endemic to only this park and elands the biggest shy antelopes, leopards and giraffes. This is one guaranteed walking safari  that would not disappoint.

Kidepo valley national park which is the most natural national park. The famous walking safaris are possible but not very common yet they are rewarding with one of the biggest buffalo herds in east Africa or the prides of lions, the animals in this park have less visitors hence more wild and great experience.
